Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (aka MH370 or MAS370) was a scheduled international passenger flight operated by Malaysia Airlines that disappeared on 8 March 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to its planned destination, Beijing Capital International Airport.

With the amount of advancement of technology in today's world, it is shocking that we haven't been able to locate an aircraft! The mystery of MH370 still remains unsolved and it is the biggest mystery in aviation history.  Many conspiracies involving politics (which I would like to avoid) and many theories revolve ranging from aliens, time-warps, black holes etc. But, all these bizarre theories have been declared false.

“Good night, Malaysia Three Seven Zero” were the last words anyone heard from flight MH370 before the Boeing 777 disappeared from the face of the earth with 239 people on board. We still have more questions than answers to about this mysterious occurrence. Let's find out some more.

How did it all start?

The crew of the Boeing 777-200ER aircraft last communicated with air traffic control around 38 minutes after takeoff when the flight was over the South China Sea. The aircraft disappeared from the air traffic control's radar a few minutes later but it was visible on the military's radar for another hour, which showed that the aircraft was deviating from its original flight path and was flying over the Andaman Sea and the Malay Peninsula after which it also disappeared from the military's radar screen. After this unfortunate incident, stricter aviation safety measures were implemented to prevent more incidents like this.

The Search

The search for Flight MH370 was the costliest search ever in aviation history. The search was suspended after almost three years of futile investigation. An extensive search was carried out by various parties and governments of different nations.
Initially, the search was focused in the South-East Asia region, but after it was revealed that the aircraft had deviated from its flight path, the search was continued in the Southern regions of the Indian Ocean. On January 17, 2017, the governments of China, Malaysia and Australia announced the suspension of the search of the aircraft.
On 17 October 2017, the Malaysian government received proposals from three companies, including the Dutch-based Fugro company and American-based Ocean Infinity to continue the search of the aircraft. The Malaysian government approved this action. On 9th June 2018, even this attempt failed and Ocean Infinity suspended the search.
The Malaysian government was willing to resume the search again in 2019 and Ocean Infinity accepted it. But again, not much was found.
26 countries had participated in the search of MH370 including India, Pakistan, Thailand, France, Japan, UAE etc.

Debris

There were various claims of debris found in many countries. Some of them are confirmed to be from the aircraft by the Malaysian Government. The debris of the aircraft has been found in France, Mozambique, South Africa, Mauritius and Australia.

Possible reasons for the disappearance

After lots of investigation, there have been various reasons introduced to explain why this tragic event occurred. They include -
  • Power interruption
  • Hypoxia or unresponsive crew
  • Crew or passenger involvement
  • Cargo
